The principle of ‘sustainable development’ targets society as a whole and thus encompasses environmental, economic and social aspects. To ensure concerted action within all three areas, a balanced interplay between technological, political and societal measures is required. It is therefore key to (1) bring together and enable relevant stakeholders, (2) develop tools for monitoring progress and (3) develop visions for the future. Research can make significant contributions to achieving these goals.
