Management of marine environments

The challenge

Oceans and seas provide a multitude of vital ecosystem services to humankind including carbon storage, oxygen production and food generation. Currently the main threats to marine biodiversity and ultimately the integrity of ecosystems are (1) pollution due to maritime activities such as crude oil extraction, (2) climate change and (3) overfishing. Integrated management concepts - based on research findings - should aim to address before-mentioned challenges while at the same time further promoting alternative and untapped potentials such as renewable energy applications.
