The Commission is inviting experts as well as the public at large to give their views on the needs for EU action related to nanotechnologies in the next five years. The consultation is open until 19 February 2010.

The EC recently published the NMP Expert Advisory Group Position Paper on future RTD activities of NMP for the period 2010-2015

The report was written by 25 experts in 4 working groups: economic impacts, nanotechnology, materials and production processes. The economic impact should be increased by dedicating 40% of the NMP budget to the currently 3 European Public Private Partnerships in the NMP area. A new horizontal research priority on NMP Sustainability is introduced as well.

Die aktuelle RP7-Ausschreibung im Bereich Nano, Werkstoffe und neue Produktionstechnologien stand im Zentrum eines internationalen Brokerage Events, das am 11. September 2009 in Grenoble, Frankreich stattfand.
Über 80 TeilnehmerInnen aus Frankreich, Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz nützten die Gelegenheit, sich zu vernetzen und mögliche Projektpartner zu finden.

Die Zukunft der Nanotechnologie steht im Zentrum des internationalen Workshops „Foresight, Roadmaps and Indicators for Nanoindustry“, der von 7. bis 8. Oktober in Moskau, Russland im Rahmen des Nanoforums 2009 stattfindet.

The NFFA project is a Design Study for a European distributed infrastructure in Nanoscience. It is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for research and technological development (2007-2013), under the Capacities Specific Programme - Research Infrastructures.

The present call aims at identifying:

    * Additional contributors from nanoscience laboratories (academic, governmental, private) of EU Member States and Associated States in order to represent all potential European users of NFFA
    * Large Scale Facilities for nanoscience that see potential synergies with NFFA Centres

Outline of NFFA Project

The NFFA project intends to study the feasibility of a European cluster of nanoscience facilities, which will consist of 3-6 Centres closely attached to a number of selected Large Scale Facilities located within Europe (synchrotron radiation sources, neutron scattering sources, high power lasers including free electron lasers, high performance computing, etc). The NFFA cluster of nanoscience facilities will enable users to conduct fine analysis experiments and modeling at the nanoscale by offering access to state-of-the-art design, synthesis, nanofabrication and analysis to a wide and multidisciplinary research community. Hence, by providing innovative cutting edge preparation and characterization technologies to European scientists, this delocalized institution will raise the standards of nanoscience experiments in the European Research Area and allow full exploitation of the affiliated Large Scale Facilities.

Role of Additional Contributors

Additional contributors will be involved in the NFFA project by:

    * participating to general and specific workshops;
    * collaborating in the implementation of NFFA work packages;
    * collaborating in the implementation of specific tasks.

The NFFA project, due to contract constraints, cannot allocate funds to the additional contributors but can provide coverage of their travel/participation expenses related to NFFA working sessions or to specific site visits.

- with Distributed Nano-Foundry Facilities co-located with relevant Fine Analysis Facilities (Synchrotron Radiation, Neutron Sources, Ultrafast and Power Lasers and FELs)

European Commission has awarded a feasibility study for setting up a cluster of distributed nanoscience foundries co-located at the large scale facilities in EU member states (for further information see http://nffa.tasc.infm.it/). As a part of the feasibility study, a wide consultation in nanoscience research community and the user community of large scale facility is necessary.

It is well known that large scale facilities, such as synchrotron radiation source, neutron scattering source and high power laser, are the national and international focus points of basic and applied scientific research. There are intimate links between nanosciences, such as nanomaterials and nanobiology, and large scale scientific research facilities. By co-locating nanoscience foundries with the large scale facilities, an integrated research environment can be created. Such an environment already exists in the US where 5 nanoscience centres have been set up in 5 different US national facilities (see http://www.science.doe.gov/News_Information/News_Room/2006/nano/index.htm). Europe has been lagging behind and started to seriously look into such a strategic development.

The present survey is to investigate the current and future needs of European nanoscience research and to gauge the requirements of setting up such a cluster of distributed nanoscience foundries. Scientists and nanotechnology developers who need an access to state of the art instrumentation and methods for designing, synthesizing, nanofabricating, characterizing matter with atomic precision and performing experiments also using the fine analysis methods based on X-rays, neutrons or fast pulsed radiation are all welcome to participate the survey. This includes current users as well as supporting scientists of large scale facilities engaged in nanoscience research. Your response will help to shape the European landscape of nanoscience research and nanotechnology development, and ultimately bring benefit to your own research.

Eine breite Palette an Themen ist im Bereich Nanowissenschaften, Nanotechnologien, Werkstoffe und neue Produktionstechnologien (NMP) zur Förderung ausgeschrieben. Diese reichen von der Molekularen Fabrik über leichte Hochleistungswerkstoffe bis hin zu adaptiven Produktionssystemen. Weiters sind graphenbasierte Werkstoffe ebenso vertreten wie die molekulare Diagnostik und Bildgebung. Viele weitere Themen sind im NMP Arbeitsprogramm enthalten. Einen Vorteil in diesem Programm bietet das 2-stufige Einreichprozedere, da das Projekt in der ersten Stufe nur grob beschrieben werden muss und dies eine Erleichterung bei der Projektantragstellung bedeutet. Insgesamt stehen 132 Mio. Euro (ohne Budget 2010) für innovative Forschungsvorhaben zur Verfügung. Einreichfrist ist der 17. Februar 2009.

MNT ERA-Net ist eine 5jährige Initiative, die MNT Förderprogramme in 20 europäischen Ländern und Regionen umfasst.

Ziel des Netzwerks ist es, im Zuge gemeinsamer Ausschreibungen die nationalen Programme für transnationale F&E-Projekte zugänglich zu machen.

In 2 Ausschreibungen (2006 und 2007) konnten bereits 35 Projekte erfolgreich gefördert werden; an der nunmehr dritten Aussschreibung beteiligen sich 17 europäische Länder und Regionen.

The Integrated Project "NanoMembranes against Global Warming" (NanoGLOWA) is looking for an industrial partner for research towards and production of a unique type of polyethylene based membrane.

NanoGLOWA is a 26-partner 15-country project whose main objective is to develop nanostructured membranes and installations for different applications in (post-combustion) CO2 capture from power plants. In order to achieve that goal, five fundamentally different membrane types are developed. One of these types are lonomeric High Voltage Membranes (IHVMs).

The key objective of the present Competitive Call is to contract one new partner that will assist in development and production of these IHVMs.

The new partner:

• is an industrial company from an EU Member State or Associated State.
• will complement the current consortium in NanoGLOWA’s Work Package 3 (WP3), which aims to develop and optimise Ionomeric High Voltage Membranes for post combustion CO2 capture for power plant flue gas.
• possesses adequate research capabilities.
• is active in (polyethylene) foil and preferably membrane production.

Its tasks, most of which in close cooperation with existing partners, will probably include:

• Foil consistency optimisation: plasticers, antioxidants, etc.
• Foil thickness reduction towards 10 mm or less.
• Foil production method optimisation: extrusion, hot pressing, etc.

Estimated costs and funding for the tasks:
Research cost: € 200.000 (to be supported by Commission funding of up to 50%)
Total Commission funding available: € 100.000

Expected duration of participation in project: from 15th January 2009 to 30th of May 2010

A big project involving partners from ten different European countries will seek to collect information on the economic and social impact of nanotechnologies, while also preparing the establishment of a European Observatory on Nanotechnologies. The project, called ObservatoryNANO, was recently launched and is funded under the Seventh Framework Programme.

The future European Observatory on Nanotechnologies will be a source of information on issues related to new developments in the nanotechnologies sector and will examine their impact on the European economy and society, as well as measuring environmental and other risks. Additionally, the Observatory will provide specific advice to policymakers and explore other projects and initiatives related to nanotechnologies.
