| NMP-2008-2.3-1 "Advances implants and bioactive materials for critical organs" or NMP-2008-2.4-1 Inorganic/Organic Hybrid Materials Research in my group is centred around interfaces between hard (inorganic) materials and soft, self-assembling—biological or biologically relevant—systems. I am interested both in understanding the nanoscale phenomena that govern their dynamics and in developing their applications in the areas ranging from structural biology to biocompatibility and biosensor development. Lipidic systems, in their capacity as models for biological membranes, suitable environment for incorporating functional transmembrane proteins, and surface modification agents, are the main focus of the work performed with the combination of “wet” and ultra-high vacuum microscopic and spectroscopic techniques: sub-nm resolution atomic force microscopy (performed in liquid), cryo-transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.
